We never know when disaster may strike.  When it does, you not only need to be prepared with extra food storage, you can also be without power for an indefinate period of time.  The average outage can range from 3 days or even more, so it is very important that we have an alternate method of heat available, not just for cooking, but for survival in damp or cold weather.  Although 3 days is the average, some disasters last a lot longer.  Being prepared gives you a great peace of mind, not only for you, but for your family.

One method of emergency heat sources that gets down to the bare basics is how to start a fire without a match or lighter.  I ran across this video that provides very basic survival instructions that I thought I would share with you.

Emergency Food Storage: Supplies That Are Critical

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SUPPLY OF YOUR REQUIRED MEDICINES:

In addition to the long term food storage items, when a disaster strikes, some of the most critical, emergency food storage supplies are any prescription medicines you are required to take on a daily basis.  This may include, insulin & supplies, high blood pressure medicine, etc..  Make sure you are prepared with extra medication on hand.

If you use a mail in prescription service, you can usually order your meds for a ninety- day period.  You should ensure you schedule refills as soon as they are allowable by your insurance, so you keep as large a supply as possible.  Some local drug stores are now allowing a ninety (90) day prescription plan so be sure to check with them about having an emergency supply on hand.

Some of the miscellaneous items that fall into the “medicine” category are items like, vitamins, allergy medicines, nasal sprays, cough syrup, antiseptics such as Neosporin, Caladryl and other types of lotions for cuts/bites, gauze, tearable tape, alcohol, peroxide, and bandages.

It is a great idea to keep a list of all medicines, doses, and when they are taken on hand so that not only you will have it available, but also others in case you are incapacitated.

Locating Your Family In An Emergency

Let’s say you are watching your favorite TV program and all of a sudden you hear the local sirens go off.  You immediately think about where your family members are?  If you aren’t sure and you are unable to reach them, what do you do?

I came across this amazing new app you can get for your I-Phone or Android that will track your family members/friends, and let you know they are ok, no matter where they may be.  Sound unbelieveable – watch this video:

Isn’t that amazing!  I know I was really excited about this as an add on for my food storage plans and thought I would share it with others who are always looking for better ways to be prepared in emergencies.

Product Dating For Your Food Storage

Perhaps the most important issue to people who are planning for long-term food storage is “Food Product Dating”.  This issue can be very confusing, especially when you have a variety of food types in your emergency food storage.

Why Do I Need To Rotate My Food Storage?

Rotating foods by the product date is important to ensure your food storage is both safe to eat, and that the quality has been maintained to ensure that your family will get the most nutrition possible.

What Is A Sell-By -Date?

The Sell-By Date is the date the store should pull the article from shelf.  No food articles should be sold after this date.

Defining and Obtaining

Nutritional Value

Everyone would agree that fresh fruits and vegetables are the main source of vitamins and other nutrients in our diet, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables is the best way to get the nutritional value our bodies require.  However, when looking at long term food storage for our families, it is not always possible to maintain this highest level of nutritional value, but we need to do everything we can to maintain the highest level possible.

Defining “Nutritional Value” is something most people don’t think about when beginning long term food storage.  Food storage has a large impact on nutritional value when we consider whether food is going to be stored as dried food, canned, dehydrated, etc.  Some of the things that effect the nutritional value include; (1) how foods are grown, (2) how foods are prepared, (3) the method used to store and preserve them, and (4) the use of pesticides in their growing.

Arsenic Level Awareness In

Baby And Other Food Storage

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently been called on to look at establishing regulations governing the amount of arsenic in food.  Currently there are no set regulations.  While looking into food storage for babies and toddlers, we have learned that the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) does have regulations set for safe water limits for adults that allow for 10 parts arsenic per billion (ppb), yet no standards for babies and toddlers.

In this “regulated” world we live in, it’s amazing that there are no regulations for arsenic in food, especially Baby Food and Formula.  It is not known what amounts of arsenic are dangerous to babies, but for sure, high levels are not desirable for long term exposure.

Containers and Labels

For Your Food Storage

When considering food storage, the most important thing to consider first is food storage containers.  Various containers are available for short and long term food storage, but consideration must be made for your individual situation.   For instance, do you live in a dry climate, wet climate, or somewhere in between?  Also, is your food storage mostly dehydrated meals, freeze dried, or canned and store bought packages. Consideration also must be made for air- tight containers to  protect from water and rodent damage.

Three types of containers most often used are; buckets with Gamma Seal Lids, Mylar Food Storage Bags inside sealed buckets or pails, and Glass Food Storage Jars.

Babies and Children Food Storage

When considering long – term food storage and emergency food storage, you must take special measures to ensure you have made special preparations for babies and small children.

Since most baby foods aren’t packed full of special preservatives and loose their nutrition quickly, measures must be taken to have the means to make your own baby food from your family food storage.

In order to be prepared to make your own baby food, several tools will be critical.  Among those are, hand mixers, beaters, potato mashers, etc..  Any tools such as these will be very beneficial as long as they, of course, are not electrical in case of a power outage.   A hand grinder is also a handy tool to have for your food storage.

A dehydrator will be of great benefit in the preservation of baby food.
